Barangay Tongonan

Barangay Tongonan is a small barangay in the municipality of Kananga, located in the province of Leyte, in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines.

According to the 2020 Census of Population and Housing conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority, Barangay Tongonan had a population of 1,610. This made it the 17th largest of 23 barangays in Kananga by population, placing it in the middle tier of the municipality. Residents of Barangay Tongonan accounted for approximately 2.70% of the total population of Kananga, which stood at 59,696 in the same census year.

Census comparisons between 2015 and 2020 show Barangay Tongonan moving from 1,678 residents to 1,610 residents, an intercensal change of -4.1%. The trajectory indicates a contracting community. The Philippine Statistics Authority classifies Barangay Tongonan as urban, reflecting the density and built-up character of the area.

Kananga is a municipality comprising 23 barangays, and serves as the governing unit directly responsible for local services in Barangay Tongonan, including public health, sanitation, peace and order, and civil registration. The barangay's legislative and executive affairs are handled by a Punong Barangay and the Sangguniang Barangay, elected nationwide during the Barangay and SK Elections. The next BSKE is scheduled for Monday, November 2, 2026, following the synchronized election schedule set by COMELEC Resolution No. 11191.
