This made it the 44th largest of 63 barangays in Virac by population, placing it in the middle tier of the municipality. Residents of Barangay Hawan Ilaya accounted for approximately 0.88% of the total population of Virac, which stood at 76,520 in the same census year.

Between the 2015 and 2020 censuses, the population of Barangay Hawan Ilaya changed from 643 to 676, a shift of +5.1% over the five-year period. This places the barangay among those with growing populations in Virac.
