Barangay San Mateo

Barangay San Mateo is a large barangay in the municipality of Arayat, located in the province of Pampanga, in the Central Luzon region of the Philippines.

According to the 2020 Census of Population and Housing conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority, Barangay San Mateo had a population of 6,611. This made it the 6th largest of 30 barangays in Arayat by population, placing it in the upper half of the municipality. Residents of Barangay San Mateo accounted for approximately 4.56% of the total population of Arayat, which stood at 144,875 in the same census year.

Between the 2015 and 2020 censuses, the population of Barangay San Mateo changed from 6,382 to 6,611, a shift of +3.6% over the five-year period. This places the barangay among those with growing populations in Arayat. The Philippine Statistics Authority classifies Barangay San Mateo as urban, reflecting the density and built-up character of the area.

Arayat is a municipality comprising 30 barangays, and serves as the governing unit directly responsible for local services in Barangay San Mateo, including public health, sanitation, peace and order, and civil registration. Within the wider province of Pampanga, which contains 538 barangays across its component cities and municipalities, Barangay San Mateo ranks 94th by 2020 population. Pampanga is classified as a 1st by the Bureau of Local Government Finance, a category that reflects the province's annual regular income.

Barangay San Mateo is governed by an elected Sangguniang Barangay composed of a Punong Barangay and seven kagawads, with the Sangguniang Kabataan representing the youth. The next BSKE, set for Monday, November 2, 2026, will elect officials to four-year terms as provided under Republic Act No. 12232.
