Barangay Balakan

Barangay Balakan is a small barangay in the municipality of Salug, located in the province of Zamboanga Del Norte, in the Zamboanga Peninsula region of the Philippines.

According to the 2020 Philippine census, Barangay Balakan had a population of 1,245. This made it the 10th largest of 23 barangays in Salug by population, placing it in the middle tier of the municipality. Residents of Barangay Balakan accounted for approximately 3.87% of the total population of Salug, which stood at 32,134 in the same census year.

Census comparisons between 2015 and 2020 show Barangay Balakan moving from 1,134 residents to 1,245 residents, an intercensal change of +9.8%. The trajectory indicates a growing community. Barangay Balakan is officially classified as rural, a designation applied to barangays with lower population density and predominantly non-built-up land use.

Salug is a municipality comprising 23 barangays, and serves as the governing unit directly responsible for local services in Barangay Balakan, including public health, sanitation, peace and order, and civil registration. The next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) are scheduled for Monday, November 2, 2026, with officials serving four-year terms under Republic Act No. 12232.
