This made it the 35th largest of 46 barangays in Island Garden City of Samal by population, placing it among the smaller barangays of the city. Residents of Barangay San Miguel accounted for approximately 1.42% of the total population of Island Garden City of Samal, which stood at 116,771 in the same census year.

The barangay recorded 1,644 residents in the 2015 intercensal count and 1,663 residents in the 2020 Census — a net change of +1.2%, consistent with a slowly expanding settlement. The Philippine Statistics Authority classifies Barangay San Miguel as rural, a designation applied to barangays with lower population density and predominantly non-built-up land use.

Island Garden City of Samal is a city comprising 46 barangays, and serves as the governing unit directly responsible for local services in Barangay San Miguel, including public health, sanitation, peace and order, and civil registration.
