Barangay Balabag forms part of Santa Barbara, a municipality in Iloilo, and is classified as a mid-sized barangay.

This made it the 1st largest of 60 barangays in Santa Barbara by population, placing it among the most populous barangays of the municipality. Residents of Barangay Balabag accounted for approximately 5.51% of the total population of Santa Barbara, which stood at 67,630 in the same census year.

Census comparisons between 2015 and 2020 show Barangay Balabag moving from 1,990 residents to 3,728 residents, an intercensal change of +87.3%. The trajectory indicates a growing community. The Philippine Statistics Authority classifies Barangay Balabag as rural, a designation applied to barangays with lower population density and predominantly non-built-up land use.

Santa Barbara is a municipality comprising 60 barangays, and serves as the governing unit directly responsible for local services in Barangay Balabag, including public health, sanitation, peace and order, and civil registration.
