Situated in Tomas Oppus, Southern Leyte, Barangay Ponong is one of 29 barangays that make up the municipality within Eastern Visayas.

This made it the 15th largest of 29 barangays in Tomas Oppus by population, placing it in the middle tier of the municipality. Residents of Barangay Ponong accounted for approximately 2.82% of the total population of Tomas Oppus, which stood at 16,990 in the same census year.

Census comparisons between 2015 and 2020 show Barangay Ponong moving from 486 residents to 479 residents, an intercensal change of -1.4%. The trajectory indicates a broadly stable community. Barangay Ponong is officially classified as rural, a designation applied to barangays with lower population density and predominantly non-built-up land use.
