Barangay Makina forms part of Balete, a municipality in Batangas, and is classified as a mid-sized barangay.

Between the 2015 and 2020 censuses, the population of Barangay Makina changed from 1,757 to 3,624, a shift of +106.3% over the five-year period. This places the barangay among those with growing populations in Balete. The Philippine Statistics Authority classifies Barangay Makina as rural, a designation applied to barangays with lower population density and predominantly non-built-up land use.

Balete is a municipality comprising 13 barangays, and serves as the governing unit directly responsible for local services in Barangay Makina, including public health, sanitation, peace and order, and civil registration. Within the wider province of Batangas, which contains 1,078 barangays across its component cities and municipalities, Barangay Makina ranks 214th by 2020 population.
