Barangay Maricalum

Situated in City of Sipalay, Negros Occidental, Barangay Maricalum is one of 17 barangays that make up the city within Western Visayas.

According to the 2020 Philippine census, Barangay Maricalum had a population of 4,459. This made it the 9th largest of 17 barangays in City of Sipalay by population, placing it in the middle tier of the city. Residents of Barangay Maricalum accounted for approximately 6.15% of the total population of City of Sipalay, which stood at 72,448 in the same census year.

The barangay recorded 4,304 residents in the 2015 intercensal count and 4,459 residents in the 2020 Census — a net change of +3.6%, consistent with a growing settlement. Barangay Maricalum is officially classified as rural, a designation applied to barangays with lower population density and predominantly non-built-up land use.

City of Sipalay is a city comprising 17 barangays, and serves as the governing unit directly responsible for local services in Barangay Maricalum, including public health, sanitation, peace and order, and civil registration. Within the wider province of Negros Occidental, which contains 662 barangays across its component cities and municipalities, Barangay Maricalum ranks 216th by 2020 population. Barangay Maricalum is governed by an elected Sangguniang Barangay composed of a Punong Barangay and seven kagawads, with the Sangguniang Kabataan representing the youth. The next BSKE, set for Monday, November 2, 2026, will elect officials to four-year terms as provided under Republic Act No. 12232.
