Barangay New Carmen

Barangay New Carmen forms part of Sominot, a municipality in Zamboanga Del Sur, and is classified as a small barangay.

According to the 2020 Philippine census, Barangay New Carmen had a population of 899. This made it the 11th largest of 18 barangays in Sominot by population, placing it in the middle tier of the municipality. Residents of Barangay New Carmen accounted for approximately 4.72% of the total population of Sominot, which stood at 19,061 in the same census year.

The barangay recorded 870 residents in the 2015 intercensal count and 899 residents in the 2020 Census — a net change of +3.3%, consistent with a growing settlement. Barangay New Carmen is officially classified as rural, a designation applied to barangays with lower population density and predominantly non-built-up land use.

Sominot is a municipality comprising 18 barangays, and serves as the governing unit directly responsible for local services in Barangay New Carmen, including public health, sanitation, peace and order, and civil registration. Within the wider province of Zamboanga Del Sur, which contains 779 barangays across its component cities and municipalities, Barangay New Carmen ranks 418th by 2020 population.
