This made it the 4th largest of 31 barangays in Malungon by population, placing it among the most populous barangays of the municipality. Residents of Barangay Malalag Cogon accounted for approximately 4.62% of the total population of Malungon, which stood at 105,465 in the same census year.

Between the 2015 and 2020 censuses, the population of Barangay Malalag Cogon changed from 4,512 to 4,875, a shift of +8.0% over the five-year period. This places the barangay among those with growing populations in Malungon. The Philippine Statistics Authority classifies Barangay Malalag Cogon as rural, a designation applied to barangays with lower population density and predominantly non-built-up land use.
